female runners

Do women jog where you live? My girlfriend moved to Hiroshima a couple months ago and said she hasn’t seen a female runner yet. She runs pretty frequently too, maybe 3x a week, and has changed up what time of day she goes as well. I thought this was bizarre since I feel like I see women running where I live all the time. She also said she gets a lot of stares, which is wearing on her (I know, we all have to deal with it) but I was wondering if maybe this is a weird location-specific thing?

Sorry if this should be posted in a city-specific subreddit, but r/hiroshima seemed kind of dead so I thought it might be better to ask here.

  1. I live in Yokosuka and I see a ton. I’m a male runner and run everyday and see women running every time I go out.

  2. My running course here in our corner of Kyushu goes through an industrial port that is popular with local runners because it has a 3km outer loop road that is perfect for running. I always see women out running when I’m running. There are a lot of them.

  3. I lived in Hiroshima for 18 months. There is a running path along the 太田川. I saw adult female and male, high school students running there.

  4. I run, although not as much as I should, and see *tons* of female runners.

By far the more likely explanation is that she simply hasn’t *noticed* the other female runners.

  5. I live in central Japan and I don’t see too many in my neighborhood. I see more female walkers.

  6. Yes, but the ratio is about 10 to 1 (male to female runners). I see much more men and nearly all of them are middle aged and up.

  7. Hey I live in Hiroshima. To see a woman running is rare. But she definitely isn’t the only one, closer to the Ujina and Higashi ku area you may see some women runners! Also you should get less stares in Minami-ku, v chill people.

Hiroshima is also just absurdly conservative compared to every other mid sized city in Japan. So an immigrant woman running is v confusing for people in the city of peace lol
