I do have a nicotine addiction and i smoke cigarettes, i’ll be moving to Japan the next month. And i’m wondering what are the laws concerning smoking are like in public, restaurants, or even my own appartement.
You can basically smoke everywhere. There are designated areas in public, restaurants. Easy to find. If living in apartment, smoking availability will be on the lease.
You can only smoke in the smoking area when you’re outside. If you don’t live in a shared house I think that you can smoke in your apartment, but ask the agency first. Some restaurants and bar have a smoking area
You can smoke in public smoke spaces and if your rental lease says you can.
Everywhere else is not allowed.
There are smoking rooms almost everywhere. Nagoya airport has one. I’ve seen arcades with them. Just smoke there. I cant ever recall anyone smoking in restaurants.
>in public
There are designated smoking areas in public areas. If you smoke outside of those areas you may get a small fine. They’ll usually be pretty clearly marked.

A lot of buildings will have rules against smoking on your balcony. So make sure you clarify your buildings rules around it before you sign the lease.
Where abouts in Japan are u going to? Tokyo has a street ban basically everywhere so you need to go to specified smoking zones either outside or else smoke inside cafes or restaurants with a smoking zone. I downloaded an app called “Smoking Area Information Map”. It really helped when I was in an unfamiliar area of town. For Aichi, Nagoya city has a lot of bans for smoking on the street but branch out to areas outside of the city and you’ll be fine smoking anywhere. If you’re unsure, you can most of the time just smoke in front of the convenience store(in non city areas). Hope this helps. Oh wait also if you vape then bring plenty of juice because they don’t sell nicotine included vape juice.
