prospective master’s student

i didn’t see a general questions post so i’m making this myself.

i feel like things are looking pretty bleak for myself regarding this but i finished university in america and i’ve been here in japan for a year actually. i’ve wanted to study here for a long time and when i took N2 in 2019 i was just shy of passing. i don’t even know that i intend to do a program in the japanese language, though.

my concerns though are i am positively terrible at math, haven’t done anything related to math in years and there’s no way i would pass a math score.

would this even be necessary for a master’s program? my field would be related to english education or possibly translation, continuing from my linguistics undergrad degree. to be fair, this problem has kept me from applying to master’s even in my home country.

does anyone have a similar experience of applying to a master’s program here? what was your experience like?

  1. If you apply through MEXT university track, your entrance exam is directly related to your major.

Side note I sincerely doubt a masters of English education is worth obtaining in Japan.

  2. For what it’s worth, I got into Japanese grad school from outside the country and didn’t have to take any kind of exam at all.
