I’ve got a ton of experience teaching JHS and below but not so much experience preparing my students for the upcoming entrance examinations.
I was just curious if any of you have good advice to prepare a child for his/her high school examinations.
Also, do you have any good textbook/workbook recommendations for:
* Reading – é•·æ–‡
* Vocabulary
Thank you so much!

A lot of high school entrance exams are quite like EIKEN questions and similar hoped for level. Go for a couple EIKEN pre-2 and 2 prep books and you should be doing okay.
For chobun reading and writing, our junior high third years and senior high first year students are working through パラグラフリーディング. It’s easy to understand and has clear examples.
For vocab work through the GSL and AWL.
Depends on the school. Blah, general HS will just rip off Eiken and TOEC questions because they are lazy and English isn’t really important.
Real international schools will require the student have done at least grade 7 and 8 fully in English and they will require an essay that is graded to native standards.
If you go to the official Eiken website, you will be able to access/download all prior Eiken tests in full. They are updated VERY regularly, as in within a week of the national test being set and I’ve heard most schools tend to base their end of year (high-school entrance) English examinations around questions or a similar format to that found in the Eiken tests.
