Continuing Braces Away from Japan

My son’s dentist recommended he visit an orthodontist. It’s clear he will need braces very soon. My wife and I (who is not a Japanese citizen) are not sure how much longer we will be in Japan. It all depends on my work. My current contract is up for renewal in 2 years. We’re thinking of heading back to my home country (UK) when it expires as most of our family lives there. But in all honestly, it’s a bit of a question mark at the moment. When I brought this up to the orthodontist, he was insistent that we delay treatment until we return to the UK. However, if my son needs treatment, I don’t want to delay on account of my job situation. I understand that it may make it more expensive in the long run, but that is entirely ok. We want to prioritize his treatment. Has anybody here had a similar situation where they started braces here in Japan but moved abroad and continued treatment?

  1. Orthodontists will not work on equipment placed by another doctor because they do not know the quality or specifics of the treatment and don’t want to be responsible if something goes wrong. So if your son gets braces or something else permanently placed, you’d have to remove it all then have it placed again by a UK orthodontist. All of that is incredibly painful, time consuming, and expensive. That’s why they’re telling you to wait.
