I’ve come across this a few times, where someone says a dish tastes like salt, or is really salty, but the implication seems to be that the dish is flavoured with tears i.e. is salted with tears, because it reminds the person of something nostalgic or an emotional memory etc.
Is this actually an expression in Japanese or do I have this all wrong?!

Do you have an example of this? And what is the wording in Japanese?
This sounds like a question about translation, not about Japanese, but it’s likely that you’re referring to the fact that 辛い is means both salty (からい) and emotionally painful (つらい).
