Using overnight Ferry – need advice!

Hello! My last post got taken down so hoping if I elaborate more on my question it gets allowed.

My husband and I are arriving at the Tokyo-Kyushu Ferry Shinmoji at 2100. We have to be at our hostel by 2200 no exceptions. Google is saying it is 33 minutes via taxi to our hostel. The ferry we are on is huge and I would presume >150 passengers would be departing. We are arriving on a Sunday evening, where the following day is Golden Week (May 31st).
So my question is, does anybody know if getting a taxi from that ferry port, on that date, at that time, seems realistic? Are there lots of taxis waiting like at the airport? People can take their cars on board so my worry that it’s only likely you will be driven out of there via your own car.

If anyone can shed some light on this I would really appreciate it! Internet searches are telling me nothing!

  1. Sorry I don’t know about taxis, but the homepage for the ferry terminal says there is a bus that leaves after the boat docks that goes to Monji Station (arrives at around 21:30) and Kokura Station (arrives at around 21:50). Not sure if those are anywhere near your hostel however.

  2. I saw somebody’s comment on Google regarding arrival there at night. There is a free shuttle bus to take you to the bus station. They mentioned it’s a little further than most ferry stops to train stations. They had a couple of photographs and it looked pretty desolate. I didn’t see any taxis in the photo.

  3. I would not stay at this hostel and get a business hotel with late check-in instead.

I haven’t taken this specific ferry but many others and they are sometimes a bit delayed. Also you won’t get off the ferry right at 21:00.
Sometimes there are taxis at the ports, but do you really want this kind of stress?

  4. Is your hostel in Fukuoka? I took a different ferry (the Meimon Taiyo headed to Osaka), but it also leaves from the Shin Moji port. The port is NOT close to Fukuoka at all, we took a 15-20 min Shinkansen ride from Hakata to Kokura station, then the 40 min free shuttle provided by the ferry from Kokura station to Shin Moji port. Taking a cab would certainly be faster than public transportation, but it’s a risky plan. I didn’t see any taxis at all at the port, but I honestly wasn’t really looking for them since I was focused in boarding the ferry.
