Chef knives in Yokosuka

I will be spending about two months in Yokosuka soon and would love to by a true Japanese chef knife. Does anyone know of a shop in or near Yoko?

  1. There is a locally owned shop in the Mikasa Market on Blue Street that has been around for about 100 years. I haven’t purchased a knife there myself but it has been recommended to me a few times. I don’t know the name but if you walk through the plaza you can’t miss it.

  2. If you go to Tokyo fish market you can get knived made for you. There are lots of small inexpensive vendors. My girlfriend bought me one, and she got my name carved onto it….which I’m not sure is a good thing.

  3. I back up Kikuhide! Some nice stuff there. There’s also a place in Kamakura called Togi Kikuichi!

  4. Not Tokyo but if you’re willing to go to sekai in Osaka they got the knife museum. English friendly.

  5. If you are ever in Tokyo, I suggest you go here: Japanese knife store KAMATA Hakensha. They speak a little bit of English. Also they will not up-sell you, the person at the shop was adamant I not get a carbon steel knife if it was for general purposes (they require a lot of care), I assured him I was buying it for a chef in the US who will take care of it.

Edit: the area where this store is located also has a lot of kitchen supply stores. Fun to check out.

  6. How would you get a knife back home? Do you ship it to yourself? Sorry if this is a no Brainer question…
