I’m a student and I’m going to host a Japanese student soon they’re only staying for a week but I want them to have a good and comfortable time here in Australia! I’ve been studying Japanese for 2 years now and enjoy watching anime occasionally so I know the basics, but any helpful phrases or courtesy’s would be great!

Okaerinasai – welcome home
Itekimas – I’m going out
Tadaima – I’m home
Abunai! Shawaani kyodaina kumoga iru! – Look out! There’s a gigantic spider in the shower
I’d recommend phrase like 「楽にしてね」literal translation is “take it easy” but it would work like “make yourself at home”
omanko o nametai – welcome to my home
Just be yourself and natural. That will be the best for your guest. Try to take them to see something local and cool like a kangaroo or koala. Make sure they’re aware of the dangers like brown snakes, hoop snakes, funnel webs and drop bears. I’m sure something simple like a beet root burger or fish and chips would make your guest happy.
Don’t try so hard to appeal to their culture. They’re coming to Australia to be somewhere different.
