Has anyone living in Japan needed to request their criminal history/background from the US for an employer? I need one for my employer, but I am struggling with trying to figure out how to do this from Japan. I didn’t need one for my previous employer and my current one wants one.
I did see some info about taking your finger prints yourself and sending them, but it seems pretty complicated. If you did do this, can you tell me about how it went?

Not while in Japan, but JET requires one. Where I’m from it’s all available online, so I guess doesn’t matter if you’re in Japan or not. The JET website has useful instructions on how to get one. Maybe if you Google something like “JET criminals records check” for your country you’ll be able to find links on the JET website that explain how to get one.
I needed it for a different reason, but first you need to go the FBI website, fill out the form and pay the fee. After that, you need to get a finger print card ( I think I bought mine on Amazon or Rakuten). You can either try to go to a company and pay a fee for them to do it (which you wouldn’t need the card then) or you can go to your prefecture’s main police station, not a koban, and ask them to do it for you. It’s free, but they will tell you they can’t sign it, which is ok. You don’t actually need a signature on it. You then need to print off the receipt and mail it in with your filled in finger print card to the address provided. It’s fairly simple, so I think you can get it done quickly. Getting fingerprinted is the tricky part.
Apparently you can do it yourself, but it seems complicated, so I go to the police station because I need a criminal history report from Japan as well.
