Mattress options

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on where should I get my mattress from. I already went to Nittori and saw a couple good options, then I checked amazon and its 1/3 of the one I found from nittori. Also I like my mattress a bit firm for its texture.

Any advice? Is it just better to get the one from nittori?

Thanks!

  1. Don’t skimp on a mattress. You have no idea how the Amazon mattress feels. If you found one you like at Nitori or Ikea or where ever, just go with that one. Will be a lot easier than having to throw out some Amazon mattress.

  2. We’ve always had good service from Nitori, so that’s where we buy most of our furniture, including our bed and mattress. At least if you go to Nitori you can actually lie down on the display mattresses to see how they feel. You can’t do that with Amazon.

  3. When you say “mattress”, do you mean one of those tri-fold 10cm-thick things, or a western-style “mattress and boxspring” mattress?

If the former, I can tell you from experience that the Nitori ones are crap. They feel fine at first, but within six months are squished flat where you normally lie. Had to throw it out.

On the other hand, I’ve used [this](https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00YTKIM8O) for four years and it’s just like new. More expensive than Nitori up front, but much cheaper over time.

  4. It’s Nitori, one T. No ッ.

Ikea has really good mattresses, and frames, BTW. If you tend to get hot during sleep, go for coils rather than memory foam.

  5. Firmer mattresses are definitely better. Had the mistake of buying a soft mattress. Thought they were good and was waking up with my back hurting.

  6. Nitori or IKEA is my go-to for sleeping goods.

Also don’t skimp on mattresses or pillows, you spend a third of your day on it. Splurge on it, your back will thank you and your sleeping quality too.

As for the frame, anything goes I think. My frame is a standard 8000-yen (single size) one from amazon.

  7. The advantage of offline shopping is that you can try out the real product in store. If you are particular about the firmness, texture etc it’s better to just get it from Nitori. Buying from Amazon and not liking the product will be super annoying because a mattress is very hard to return due to its size even if the policy allows it.

  8. If you’re in Kobe or Osaka, Ashley Furniture on Rokko Island has nice pillow-top mattresses

  9. Koala has sleep trials with their mattresses. There’s also a shop in Harajuku that you can try them.

  10. When I was a college student I got a mattress from Amazon because I didn’t care if it was shit. And yeah, it was ok, but not great.
But as a real adult now, I would probably never buy a mattress online unless I try it out at a shop first. If I can find the same one online for cheaper, then yeah I’ll do that, but you probably never want to buy a mattress you haven’t tried out.

As for the bed frame, I don’t think it really matters too much. I’ve bought most of my bedframes online. You get what you pay for. If it’s cheap, then it’s built cheap. But I’ve never had something that’s completely unusable in terms of bedframes, even if it’s cheap.

  11. I got a mattress and frame from Amazon for around 30,000 yen. I wanted a frame that could easily breakdown to move (wound up moving and it was perfect). I am not too picky with a mattress, so I went cheap. got a good mattress topper from Nitori. All together still cheaper than a Mattress from Nitori

  12. I got a foam mattress, queen size, on Rakuten three years ago and still love it. Was roughly Y20,000 and is on the firm side.

The only thing I’ve ever slept on that was nicer than this was a Sleep Number, but I’m not rich enough for one of those haha.

If you want a link, let me know.
    Either way, good luck! 🙂

  13. I’ve had a Nitori Premium 3 for the last 5 years.

Great mattress. Nitori’s frames suck imo so we use it with a Malm bed.
