I am so sorry for Kagawa people. They found out other nationalities live in Japan. The sakoku jidai ended and no one bothered to inform them!
Nice that Japan has finally been thinking of the human rights of foreigners. Sad that it’s just a pretty recent thing.
Sorry, but all my life I have had to show my identification in hotels, even in my country where it is very important to identify yourself with your identity card. I find it strange and exaggerated that a person feels attacked for showing their zayru card. Japan is very naive in not requiring everyone to verify their identity in hotels. In other words, for example: a Japanese criminal can easily give a false name and false address, and the hotel will not verify this information.
I think the problem here is that Japan does not have an official identification document for all citizens (they get complicated using my number, driver’s license, health insurance, passport, etc) … that is why it seems indiscriminate that only foreigners have a zayru card, when in reality this card should also be issued to Japanese people.
I’ve traveled all over Japan and have never been asked for ID.
