  1. Fresh red drum that I caught today, assorted veg, sushi rice under there somewhere.

  2. Sorry everyone here are gatekeeping sushi purists and have to make annoying comments…looks great!

  3. Brah dis not poke. Even haole fakas no can call dis poke.

In all seriousness that looks good, but I wouldn’t call that poke. If only for the cultural connotations. Brah you gotta remember that the Hawaiian people’s lands and culture were forcefully and brutally taken away from them, to the point where there are only a couple thousand in the world who speak ke Olelo Hawaii fluently. There was a recent stir when a Chicago store, owned, founded and operated by white people, tried to trademark the name “aloha” and “poke.” It’s disrespectful and shows no aloha, which misses the entire point of poke and Hawaiian culture.

That said. This is also poke. Poke in hawaiian just means cut up into chucks, which you have done with your ingredients. But you have to remember that there are cultural connotations to things and your willingness to completely ignore that and disrespect others when they call you out on it doesn’t reflect well on you. It makes you look defensive, illogical, selfish, and just an outright asshole.

It looks delicious and I’m sure you meant nothing rude or wrong about it since you didn’t know. But getting defensive and doubling down just ain’t it chief. Join us over at r/Hawaii and we’d love to share more of the culture with you! That’s the aloha spirit! Sharing and being respectful

Mahalo nui loa, Aloha, a hui hou

  4. Hey man sorry I wasn’t trying to bag on your post. I apologize. It’s true what you said tho. About adapting. All love 🫶🏽
