Thought About Employment Gap

Hi, I’m in the middle of job hunting in Japan from overseas. No luck on landing any offer yet but I think I’m on the right track as I’m getting more continuous interviews lately.

The thing is, something serious came up at my workplace and I might have to put my resignation letter ASAP, with or without job lined up since it could end up with another serious health issues.

I’m a Software Engineer with IT degree, 5+ yoe, and N2 cert. The thing is my tech stack is pretty old which has been proven as quite a disadvantage on top of not having public repo even though I’m still pretty good on leetcode-like coding test. I’m from 3rd world country so I don’t want to drain my money on language school to fill the gap if I can.

I’m planning to build a personal github portfolio with newer stack and keep job hunting in Japan while being unemployed. Would that be red flag enough to ban me from interviews? Should I update my resume immediately to put the employment end date?

  1. I wonder if there is a statistic in regarding how much people lie on their resume.
How will your prospective employer check? Will they be contacting your current employer?

My suggestion is that you could always lie?

  2. You have a legitimate medical need to take time off work.

As long as you are actively working to improve yourself during the downtime you won’t have a problem. Work on updating your tech stack and get some portfolio projects under your belt while you have this downtime.

Yes, you should. If it was only a couple of weeks you might be able to fudge it, but seeing as you’re still actively job hunting you should have an accurate resume.
