There’s some Japanese exchange students near me that I want to befriend, and I was wondering what they find funny. Do they find anime impressions or loud Japanese phrases funny? For context, they participate in a language-teaching workshop occasionally where they’re teaching Japanese.

They’re normal people like you are, just ask them. Assuming you’re American, wouldn’t it feel weird if someone walked up and started talking about football with you?
Anything but sarcasm
Say 鶏を食べたい (ni wa toe ri oh ta beh tai)
It’s a pun.
I would just try to be natural. Don’t need to try for something cultural specific. There are many Japanese ppl who don’t like anime or games and may even not like ppl who do so you need to test the waters on that one. I have no idea what “loud Japanese phrases” means but it would probably alienate some ppl
Just talk to them like you would to anyone from there, get to know them, and try to find out what they find funny. Don’t try “anime impressions or loud Japanese phrases” they might just find you weird.
Not farts. No one laughs at the super loud farts I rip in the capsule hotels I stay at
Walk up to them randomly and shout, “GETS!” while doing finger guns 👉👉
Will make 80% of Japanese above age 35 laugh, percentage decreases with age.
