School Dorm or Apartment

こんばんは!

I have to choose between living in a dorm or find an apartment.
Location: Kobe.
Dorm is 3.5万 without utilities. A month’s rent for a first time fee.
Room is about 20m2, there’s a mini kitchen and a bathroom.

Apartments cost at least 1万 more, and it’s difficult to escape the key money, cleaning fees etc. However, you get more privacy and the room is probably newer.

How do I choose? I’m really confused, please help.

– I’m on a scholarship and I think the dorm with utilities will be 1/3 of my allowance.
– I’m probably moving out after 2 years, either to another region or outside the country.
– The dorm has mostly international students, might give me a chance to socialize
– Can’t have anyone stay over in dorms

I think the dorm wins but not I don’t want to go there just because I’m escaping the hassle that comes with an apartment. It might me more comfortable after all

Any ideas? How would you guys choose?

  1. The dorm is cheaper, easier and you will make more friends. What’s there to think?

For sexy times, go to a love hotel.

  2. If you hate the dorm, at least you’ll be leaving within 2 years and get to save some money.

  3. Depends on what you value personally. I could not handle dorm life because I value my own space and I like things clean. If you don’t care about that stuff and value meeting new people and partying as much as possible, dorm might better for you.

  4. If you’re a student in a foreign country, the upside of dorms is the “support network”.

It’s easy to feel isolated and alone, when you return to an empty apartment at the end of every day. It’s worse should you become ill, and have zero support.

At the same time, The downside of dorms is that same “support network”. You’re never alone; but that is easily solved with a pair of earplugs.

Start out at the dorms, and you can always move into an apartment later. You’ll get a better idea of the area around your school, as well as your schedule, and the commute. That should give you a better idea of what/where you want your apartment to be.

Most apartments are *not* furnished, so that could be a significant additional cost. Not just to acquire furniture and applicances, but you may need to pay dispose of them prior to leaving as well.
