Just a theory, but a dictionary definition to roughneck is also ‘someone who does hard physical labor’. Which is pretty similar to ‘hard worker’. Which in turn might be what a super-face Japanese character would definitely like to be called.
But if Baron Yamazaki announcing “Rafunekkuu Umino Shota” in G1 intro video sounds cool to domestic audience that’s really all that matters.
Still think “Straight Shooter” is a better nickname for Shota.

I live in West Texas and roughneck is actually the name of a job on a drilling rig. I know it has other meanings, but because I hear that one all the time, it’s what pops into my mind when I hear the word, which really throws me off when it comes to Shota, lol.
