Question about moving prefectures

Hello everyone!

I’ve got a question about moving prefectures.
I’m currently living in Chiba, but will move to Tokyo this weekend. I am also going back to my home country to visit my family for about a month, before coming back to Japan, so I only have this Friday/Monday as business days to deal with the kuyakusho.

I was wondering how long (usually) does it take to get the Certificate of Change of Address from the kuyakusho. I’ve only moved within the same city, so it was not necessary, and all the change took about an hour in the same kuyakusho.

Would it be possible to do the whole process (getting the Change o Address Certificate and registering in the new ward office) in the same day, or in two business days?

If not possible, should I do the Moving Out procedure before going to my country, and then coming back to Japan without registering my new address?

As extra info: I live with my husband, so the new place will not be empty with me going home for visiting my family, so he will be able to do his registration of address more smoothly, while for me it’s quite in a rush.

Thank you all beforehand!

  1. Yup, they’re used to this sort of thing so it’s a very fluid process. I’m also pretty sure you have 6 weeks to complete the process. So, first register your new address at your current city hall. Once you return, you can register at the new city hall.

Hope it all goes smoothly, and enjoy your time in your home country!
