People in their 20s, how much do you make a year?

I looked up older topics but they are all like salary of ppl above 30s so i’m very curious to know how much people around my age make a year (Or how much did you make when you were in your 20s?)
I’m in my mid 20s, not a manager yet, working in It field and my salary is 5m.
Some of my friends said that’s kinda low compared to them, and i should step up my negotiation game next time.

  1. I also made around 5M in my mid 20s, I was working as a SWE at a Japanese company. IIRC it was something like 3.6M base, 0.9M annual bonus, 0.5M overtime.

  2. Keep in mind that some companies pay more in “social benefits” or bonuses while others pay more in actual お給料.
For example, it is common for japanese companies to pay a certain amount of your apartments rent. This is even tax free money up to 50% of your rent.

I’m 25yo and get 8M before taxes (7M at 22yo when I started at the company), but I get no bonus or rent money, I do get my train paid tho.

  3. 3.5 mil from main job and another 1 mil from side hustles. Really working hard for that side hustle to become the main one tho.

Edit: getting into the late 20’s now

  4. Mechanical engineer in my late 20s, 4.2m before tax including bonus. Living alone so spendings are small. Just started working in 2021 though. Been thinking of tenshoku, maybe next year.

5m for mid 20s is pretty above average dude, that’s even higher than mine. Your friends’ standards are too high.

  5. 5m in mid 20s is great, but staying in the same company won’t get you to your target before 30s, so you’re gonna have to switch. Sometimes this decision is difficult if you don’t hate your job (environment and all), but don’t get paid enough either…

As for me, late 20s and about the same.

  6. People from which region in Japan? People living in Tokyo obviously have a higher salary than someone living in a remote region, but the cost of living is higher as well.

  7. Mid-late 20s, I make 3.1M but I’m a kids eikaiwa teacher so this is about as good as it’s going to get. Currently working on changing fields.

My boyfriend was making about 4M in his late 20s as a public elementary school teacher.

5M for your mid 20s is pretty decent. The salaries people report on here are just inflated by all the tech bros in Tokyo making crazy money.

  8. In my mid-20s I was making 4-5 mil, late 20s I was making about 9-10

I was doing sales for an IT company, when I got promoted to manager I got paid much more

  9. It’s very dependent on what you do and what kind of company you work for.

Larger Japanese companies will pay more in general than suppliers. Foreign companies will often pay more than Japanese companies but bonus structures are different and stability can be an issue.

In large J companies you may be part of a peer group that spends a few years in a level and then moves up a level. Per year you might see a smaller increase and the if you make it to the next level after 3 years the increase is larger.

Foreign companies are very job, skill, and advancement oriented, so the faster you advance or the more in demand your skillset, the more you will make.

On top of all this layer in your industry. Banking, Pharma, and Tech pay more. Manufacturing and lower margin companies like publishing pay less.

  10. I was making ¥5m per annum when I came to Japan at 25. It stayed that way until I changed job and company at 29 and started earning ¥11m per annum. Currently 30 and earning slightly above that in the same role.

Both jobs were chemical/process engineering roles but in different industries.

  11. Late 20’s, roughly 10m. Also in IT. Have a small side job that I work about 30h a month that gives me roughly 4m give or take.

  12. Around 5m after taxes and all other deductions. I also have my phone paid for.
    Late 20s.

  13. I’m interested in how many years of experience all of you have to be in this current salary level.

I’m in my mid-30s, IT for 4 years, my salary is obviously in the mid-20s level but I can’t complain about that. (4 m)
