**Tax in Japan**
Hi. I’ll be staying in Japan as a student. How much should I pay for residential, income tax, and health?
I’ll be receiving around 145,000 yen. Don’t know if I’m gonna survive *comfortably* after taxes and bills (dorm, electricity, water) 😢

I’d expect your income to be in the 5% tax bracket. Residence tax is charged in arrears so you won’t have to worry about that until next year (make sure you keep cash in the bank) but is also based on income, so it shouldn’t be too bad. You can ask your cityhall for a rough estimate so you know how much you’ll pay next year.
Don’t forget to apply for the national pension exemption! You’ll have to request it each year that you’re a student, otherwise you’ll be on the hook for national pension payments too.
>Don’t know if I’m gonna survive comfortably after taxes and bills
You’re not really meant to… They want people burning through savings and then either leaving or entering the full-time workforce. But your monthly income is certainly survivable.
>I’ll be receiving around 145,000 yen
If you’re receiving it as some sort of stipend, talk to your organization first about taxes because it may be after taxes. Also apply for the exemption as u/Benevir says.
>Don’t know if I’m gonna survive comfortably
Don’t worry too much about it because you’d be living better than students who have to work for a living.

You can calculate your health insurance costs yourself, here are the details courtesy Shibuya cityhall (it’ll be the same nationwide): https://www.city.shibuya.tokyo.jp.e.mu.hp.transer.com/kurashi/kokuho/kenkohokenryo/hokenryo_26.html
