Kanazawa Advice

Good day!

Going in a week and we come from Osaka , Spend a night in Kanazawa, then leave for Kyoto the next day.

**Day 7: Kanazawa**

\- Omoichi Market

**- Kenroku**

\- Castle park

\- Ishiura Shrine

\- Ninja temple

\- Lady Baba

\- Higashi Chaya district

So the question is in four parts.

1. May sound complicated, but wondering if I should fully immerse my day in Kanazawa, here I added my full to do list. But I hear while this may sound like a lot that it can be done in half a day. So thinking we plan for morning and night and do a day trip to Shirakawa-go and come back. really looking forward to lady Baba, hoping they’ll allow us in because we’re first time foreigners. Kanazawa is the wild card so legit if we should just spend a whole day there I’ll be fine chilling.
2. Also wondering if we should cut into our four day Kyoto time on our way there after Kanazawa to stop by Takayama. We have the JR pass and maybe I’m being too ambitious. Would love some reccs for Kanazawa especially. Thank you!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!

  1. Feel like Kanazawa to Kyoto is better than traveling from Takayama to Kanazawa. Not sure if JR pass covers the bus from Kanazawa to Takayama, but if not youre gonna have to take the train to Toyama. (Not sure because I cant access hyperpedia right now 😅)

Personally, I would spend 2 nights in Kanazawa. Im planning to go in autumn 🥰

  2. The train from Toyama to Takayama runs 8 times a day. 4 of those trains are locals and 4 are expresses. That is it. Some of the locals arrive within 20 minutes of the express, they just leave a lot earlier.

I think you will struggle to get in everything you want to do with your time in Kanazawa, unless you are planning to arrive in Kyoto quite late at night.

It’s 3 hours from JR Osaka Station to Kanazawa Station. So you’re not going to be getting to Kanazawa until around 11 more than likely.

I have no idea why you are going back to Kyoto unless this is a Kansai only trip.

  3. Hello! Was just in Kanazawa a few days ago and while I do agree this could be done quickly, adding a day trip to Shirakawa-go would take too long due to the infrequent buses.

We relied on public transportation most of the trip but Kanazawa buses were harder for us to catch so we only really explored Higashi Chaya and Omoichi Market. We after arrived from Tokyo in the morning and exhaustion from the trip started coming in. We went on a weekend and dinner was rough as every place was reserved!

  4. Hi! I live in Kanazawa. It’s a lovely place!

I recommend you take the day to explore if you are coming here for the first time. Regarding your itinerary, I would recommend the following order for efficiency/less travelling back and forth between places. (I’ll assume you’re starting from Kanazawa station).

    1. Omicho Market (Bus from the station)
    2. Ninja Temple (Bus from Omicho to Hirokoji)
    3. Ishiura Shrine (Bus from Hirokoji to Hirosaka/21st Century Museum
    4. Kenrokuen (Walking – it’s right next to Ishiura Shrine!)
    5. Castle park (Walking – it’s right next to Kenrokuen!)
    6. Higashi Chaya district and Lady Baba (Bus from Kenrokuen/Kanazawa Park to Hashiba-cho)

If you are using Suica/Pasmo cards, these don’t work in Kanazawa. Not sure if the JR-pass works for the buses, bus I suspect not. I recommend you get a 1 day bus pass (600yen) when you arrive at kanazawa station. You can then use the loop bus all day. I created the above schedule with the left-loop bus in mind. You can find the route here: ([http://www.hokutetsu.co.jp/en/en_round](http://www.hokutetsu.co.jp/en/en_round)).

Shirakawa-go is also a really nice place. Probably could spend 1/2 a day there. In terms of getting all you want to do, done plus going to Shirakawa-go, I think 1 day may be pushing it in terms of time!

Hope you enjoy your time here!

PS. If you have time, I also recommend you visit the Samurai House! You can get the bus to Korinbo bus stop (between omicho and hirokoji) and walk there.

  5. There is so much to do and enjoy in Kanazawa- you could easily spend a while there!
