Tax Free Shopping

Have some family here and they have done tax free shopping (clothing, etc). One of the shops said they need to put in their *carryon* as customs officer will ask to see all the tax free purchases during outward/exit immigration (it’s all electronically connected to the passport now).

Has anyone experienced this, or can they put in their check-in luggage as would normally be done?

  1. I experienced this in Paris, at the airport, so I know that for high value purchases, customs officers would like to see if the purchased items really exist.

  2. While you’re technically supposed to declare all your tax free shopping when you leave, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody at that counter actually doing it.

  3. Leaving Japan I’ve never seen anyone opening up their bags. After they go through security they will head to immigration.

Before they go through immigration in that room there is a box to put the paperwork I believe. Nobody opens bags though so I’m sure it’s fine to put stuff in the checked bags

PS not true for other countries. They were very strict when I left the UK
