How can I get a duplicate key for my car in japan?

I lost one of the original keys for our car. How can I obtain another one. Thanks!

  1. Is it just a normal key, nothing special? No push buttons?

If so then either go to the dealer and buy one and have them cut it or, a cheaper option depending on the make of car, is to take one of your originals to a home centre/DIY place and have them cut a copy.

  2. you need to go to the dealer..it has a chip(to prevent thief) in it and a standard copy won`t work… (unless the car is real real old)

  3. If it’s one with NFC, I think you would have to get it from an authorized car dealership. Not had to do this, so I could be wrong. Your car’s manual might have some info about it, too.

  4. I had the same problem recently and ended going to a dealer (Nissan in my case). It actually ended up way cheaper than going to a normal locksmith or key maker.

But you’ll have to get your car towed to the dealer if you had a smart key and don’t have anything for them to identify it with. If you have car insurance the insurance company should be able to organise it through your insurance plan free of charge.

  5. I bought a blank car key from Rakuten and got it cut in a store.

I obviously only had the key and not the electronic parts

  6. Do you have the little metal tag with the key ID on it that comes with the keys when the car is first sold?

  7. If it’s a simple metal key you should be able to make a duplicate from the one you’ve got in any key-cutting shop. I did this for my truck (1982 Subaru Sambar), they cut the key on the spot.

If it’s a recent one you need to go to the dealer. With Daihatsu they give you a little metal tag with a number on it. If you don’t have the number they have to perform some great labour involving removing a panel or something which costs more.
