How do you say “earlier” in Japanese?

I don’t know how to say “earlier” in Japanese. There are so many ways to say it, that I’m confused in which one to use. How do I say in Japanese: “I ate (something) earlier” or “I was studying earlier”?

  1. what about さっき (some time ago) or 少し前 (a little earlier/before/in front of) ?

    japanese and time is a little … iffy
