Are some people unable to learn to read kanji?

I was originally using flashcards to learn kanji but I would the card on reverse mode so it showed the meaning of the kanji first, then i would draw it, then flip to reveal the kanji. I learned kanji well this way. Even can distinguish similar looking kanji that I learn this way.

Before that I just learnt the kanji flashcards with the kanji on the front and meaning on the back. So I dropped learning individual kanji and have just been learning words with kanji on the front. Problem is I keep forgetting how they are read. It happens with so many words in kanji form. I only seem to remember the distuingished looking kanji words and ones with kana mixed in longer term.

I’m thinking of just using the hover over feature which reveals the kana so I’ll just have to match the sound of the word to the meaning. I’m sure I get significantly less cards wrong if I read their name in kana instead of kanji. But I would prefer not to be illiterate.

    Ya, don’t do this.

  2. Did you learn the radicals and stroke order? Did you read the kanji words aloud?

  3. Was just wondering the same thing. Difficylty with kanji was one of the main reasons I stopped formal Japanese learning. I really struggle with images in general, like I don’t recognize faces well and rarely have a picture in my head. If you showed me two similar Kanji, it would take me a long time to see the difference. I don’t know that I care enough to really focus on learning Kanji, even though I want to improve my japanese.
