Has anyone managed to use your own router with Japanese internet providers? I’m using 10g-Softbank, but they’re all about the same. The provided ONU (as the “modem”) – a NTT 10G-EPON and the supplied NTT XG-100NE is a miserable combination, with the latter erroring out on all of my devices frequently – it just drops constantly.
I’m trying to connect an international Netgear router to the ONU/modem directly, but of course, that does not work. I bought a domestic NEC router that’s IPV6 compatible, but that hasn’t been able to connect either.
Has anyone managed to ditch the provided XG-100NE router?

What is your provider?
If you have a MAP-E provider, there is a way to use OPENWRT routers, but other brands like Asus, Tplink are a hit or miss.

Another issue is that you might need a custom openwrt router as I can’t think of many that have a 10G ethernet port.
My Netgear Orbi works with my NTT ONU.
[https://enhikari.jp/crosscampaign.html](https://enhikari.jp/crosscampaign.html) <= Hikari also uses that ONU and recommends these routers. In any case, make sure you’re using a CAT6 or 7 cable between the router and ONU.
I actually kinda did. I went into my netgear modem hub and under ipv6 protocol I believe it had an autoconfig. My Internet became a bit faster since tbh.
This is a modem that’s not on the ipv6 japan lost here at all
I really tried to use my ONU (Sony NSD-G1000T for Nuro Hikari), but it kept dropping my wireless devices and I’d have to re-enter the password but somehow it rejected the correct password for some devices… all in all, it was a mess. Probably, reached a device count limit.
Now I have my ONU set to DMZ mode with all the ONU wireless broadcasting turned off. When configuring the DMZ settings, make sure to enter the IP of your own router so that all traffic goes to your router (which should be the only network device connected to your ONU). My ONU is connected to a Firewalla router that I imported from overseas and it works fine. I also use a spare wireless router (Synology RT6600ax) connected to my Firewalla router via wireless AP mode for the wireless connection.
Ha, I keep getting dropped wifi errors from my NTT router as I’m reading this. This is frustrating as fuck!
I bought a TP-link at our local Yamada and it works fine with NTT ONU.
I’m using a TP Link router I bought of amazon with my NTT West modem. Provider is Asahi Net. Never have any problems and speed is good enough for gaming and streaming.
