Hello! I’m going to be a university student at ritsumeikan OIC starting in the fall. I have a passion for skiing but as we all know it can be pretty pricey especially for a uni student… I have all the needed equipment, I’m half Japanese and have no problem with Japanese language or making new friends. I’m curious if there is some sort of ski club or group that I could join? Or just ways to get discounts on skiing in japan as a university student in general. If anyone has any advice or knowledge in general about skiing in Japan (preferably things most convenient and budget friendly from Osaka) as well as recommendations please let me know! Thanks!😊

Try your university to see if they have a club, but either way you’re probably going to need a car to get to most places. There’s not a ton of skiing available by easy public transportation and if there is the timing of catching the various busses won’t be in your favor to do just a day trip. You’d have to sink money in for lodging, etc.
That being said, popular places have lodging for all budget ranges, so if you don’t mind rough around the edges you can find cheap places to stay.
Enjoy!
Students who want to ski on the cheap typically get a seasonal job at a ski resort.
Takyama in Gifu prefecture has some fantastic slopes that remain largely empty through the season. I most ski passes are in the ¥1200 ~ ¥2000 / day range with lots of mid week specials.
