So far, I’m really enjoying what yamagata has to offer! My friend and I really wanted to do some hiking and Yamagata is definitely the place for it!
We only have two days left here and we really don’t know what to else to do.
Please let me know of any hidden gems in Yamagata you want to share (including restaurants)!
So far we’ve done:
– Omoshiroyama to Yamadera hike
– All of what we could possibly do in Mt. Zao during summer (including Okama of course)
Things we couldn’t do:
Dewasanzan –
Bad weather :'(
Kamo Aquarium –
Could’ve went there if we went hiking at Dewasanzan since they’re in the same city
Tamasudare Falls –
Too far
Ginzan onsen –
Gonna save this when it’s winter time
Thank you in advance! 😊

Gassan is pretty nice.
Dewa Sanzan in the Shonai region – this area is actually more accessible to Niigata. A lesser known sacred mountain area in contrast to Koyasan.
Ginzan wasn’t that far? Maybe an hour or two from Yamagata city? Just go to oishida station and get one of the hotel/ryokan shuttles to pick you up there.
I managed to leave from Sendai, spend the better part of the morning and early afternoon at Yamadera then head straight to Ginzan before dinner.
Fyi, expect to spend a lot to stay there. I’d say it’s all about your ryokan experience. The town is very small and not much to sightsee. I had amazing meals (included) and a lovely onsen at mine, but it cost like 60,000 yen for one night.

Not sure if it counts as hidden gem but you should really try the local traditional treat, fukimame.
I got a whole box from this place, it doesn’t look that great but tastes amazing seriously. Google map the name 山田家ふうき豆本舗
Also on the same street there is a very cool shop selling chinaware. Great range and good prices too. Google map the name (株)市村本店
Jealous of you being about to travel in Japan. I go two or three times a year usually but this year I couldn’t 🙁
You could stop by at Yonezawa for beef.
