Ever since I moved into my current apartment I’ve been smelling a cigarette like smell in my toilet room.
At first I thought I was imagining things or that maybe something in the room had an unpleasant similar smell, so I bought an air freshener thing.
Some days the smell is gone and some it’s there, but today when I went inside I couldn’t breathe it was so strong (I assume because the smoking was actively happening just then)
My question is, is there something I can do about this?
Would talking to the landlord help in any way?
The smoke is most likely coming from one of the apartments above or below me that are connected through the toilet room vents, but I cannot pinpoint which apartment.
(And blocking the vent is not an option since it’s the only way to air out the room)

Is smoking allowed in the apartment complex? If it is not then I suggest complaining to the housing management company. It could also be the bathroom fan is leaking scent though and needs a filter or something in it to keep the airflow clean.
Does the vent not have a suction fan in it?
Leave it on.
Venting is typically a shared system in apartments. Negative pressure is pulling it into your apartment. As the weather changes and warms you will see it happen more often or even less often. Typically bathroom exhaust fans have a baffle built in to prevent it from flowing back into the room. You could check to make sure you have one. The vent stack should pop out on the roof or an exterior wall. They can install whirly bird rain caps that draw the exhaust air up and out. Maybe ask if your landlord can install one?
That’s a health hazard that needs to be reported to the building owner or manager.
