Staying on the island is absolutely worth it. You can enjoy the island without the tourist rush, plus you can be early to the Ropeway and enjoy Mount Misen without a crowd or wait times.
Just be warned there’s basically no food options after 8 p.m. One okonomiyaki place is open around then but is often crowded with the few other people staying on the island.
