Six days / 5 nights between Tokyo and Kyoto

Hi everyone

My (34m) fiancée (29f) have four weeks in Japan in May/June, during which we’re travelling from Tokyo south to Kagoshima.
Most of our itinerary is planned, but we currently have six days (five nights) between leaving Tokyo and arriving in Kyoto.

We’re thinking we might divide this time between Toyama/Kanazawa and Nagoya, but would welcome suggestions and recommendations, including more rural areas which may be possible in the timeframe. We have broad interests and also open to getting a hire car in either location as I have an international permit.

Thanks for any ideas.

  1. Hi!

    Is there a budget?

I might do Nagano to Matsumoto to Kamikochi to Takayama to Kanazawa to Kyoto

I can’t really imagine going to Nagoya unless there is something very specific you want to do in the area. (there are some great things in the area, but just going to go, seems an odd choice and it is quite far from Toyama and Kanazawa.

If you rent a car rather than taking trains/buses be prepared for large drop off fees if the car is not returned in the prefecture rented.

If you wanted to do Nagoya I would stick to something more along the coast which might include Hakone, Izu, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, and Nagoya.

  2. what does your full schedual look like? How much of it can be changed?

if its possible, spend more time in the cities you already have plans in.

Im planning a 10 trip for Osaka, Kyoto, hiroshima and kinda wish I had more time because there is a lot to see and do around those areas.
