Advice for booking huts on Mt Fuji?

For my birthday this year, I have family and friends traveling to visit me for a hike on Mt Fuji. We will be a group of 7. I wanted to book a specific hut (we have a few vegetarians) whose bookings opened today. When I was on my train to work, the bookings still hadn’t opened. However, once I sat at my work desk and checked again less than an hour later, there were only 3 openings left on the day we want to go! Is this normal? I was pretty punctual about checking the website, and it seems like this is lowkey rivaling the difficulty of getting Taylor Swift tickets.

Is getting a hut on Fuji for a group normally this difficult? Does anyone have any advice for booking a group of 7 in a hut? Could you share your own experience booking? Thank you!

  1. Unfortunately the huts fill up crazy fast every year! I had always heard it was that bad, and when I led a hiking group in 2018, it was indeed that hard to get a reservation. Good luck, I hope you find something that’s suitable!

  2. People actually book the huts? The first time I’ve climbed it I just took short breaks and naps on the mountain out of the way of everyone else and continued upwards until I reached the top

  3. This is the first year without restrictions since Coronavirus and with the return of tourism to Japan it will be especially difficult depending on the day. Have you tried booking it on a different day, a weekday instead of on a weekend? You might see if you can add your name to a waiting list. Which trail are you using? You might consider having half your party stay in one hut, and the other half in another hut. Some Huts are very close to each other.
