most english loanwords i’ve seen for queer stuff are just direct transliterations of pre-existing english queer terminology (e.g. ホモ、トランス), but i’ve never heard the phrase “new half” in english. how did this term come into use?

There are many instances of 和製英語, to the point it’s a bit hazardous to automatically consider what seems to be a loanword to be an actual loanword.
