Strawberries?

I tried one of the Takano starberries and loved them. But they are too expensive to get more. I heard that the prices comes not just from the taste, but also shape&color. If I care just about taste, is there any other place I should get strawberries from for a better price but still great taste?

  1. If you can find a regular market, I bought a tray of strawberries for less than 500yen. They were misshapen but color was nice and were delicious.

  2. If you don’t mind putting in some effort to get out to the sticks Chiba Strawberry Road has tons of strawberry farms where you can go picking. Strawberry picking here basically works like an all-you-can-eat Strawberry fest. If you want to take strawberries home afterwards you’d have to buy them separately.

It is getting pretty late in the season though so they’ll be shutting down soon.

  3. You could try looking for local fruit/veg shops (yaoya, 八百屋 – everyday items, or kudamono shoten, 果物商店 – often a bit fancier, but sometimes more of an “outlet” operation, YMMV). They often have “lesser quality” items for cheap, but they will not have everything. Keep your eyes peeled, though, because they are everywhere.
