Listening to city pop to help with pronunciation? Is it any helpful?

So I’ve been listening to city pop way before I picked up Japanese, only because it strikes similarity to western funk music I’ve been listening to for years. I don’t watch anime that much because it’s very hard to get into (unless it’s the classics I love Ranma 1/2).

What are some ways I can incorporate media to help me learn better, my dream is to become a multi language translator and I think learning Japanese as my second language is a strong choice.

  1. Keep in mind that song lyrics often have inconsistent/incorrect/different pitch accent patterns compared to normal Japanese, so while I don’t think it’s a big deal, if you try to practice your pronunciation exactly as you hear it songs and only in songs you will probably:

    1) be pitch deaf or not notice pitch since the pitch of the song usually overrides the pitch of the words

    2) end up picking up the wrong pitch for some words because you hear it like it’s said in songs rather than how it’s said irl

  2. Music is plenty fine practice. Also, if you like Ranma you may enjoy Maison Ikkoku, it’s the same mangaka who wrote their original manga.
