do japanese diaspora (for example japanese americans) have japanese or english names or even both?

a few other ethnicities such as korean-americans usually have both an english name that they use with their peers and korean name that some use at home. is it the same case for japanese?

  1. Do you mean a name written in roman letters versus in hangol or kanji/kana? Or do you mean that Taeyong/태용 goes by that at home and is Henry in public?

I only know less than a handful of Japanese-Americans that change their name for “peers” and go by, as example, “Eric” when at work and use their actual name of “Yasu/Yasutaka/靖隆/ヤスタカ” at home.

If you mean using roman letters vs native script, all Asian folk have a roman letter transliteration of their name for use outside their native language print.

  2. Japanese-Americans tend to have English given names and Japanese middle names, but only having a Japanese given name is also somewhat common.

  3. My experience is that they have English first names, barely speak any Japanese, but still very willing to police any non-Asian looking person who dare don a yukata *shrug*

  4. My kids are Japanese/American and we did English first, Japanese middle, with the Japanese surname. However they have classmates that have full on Japanese names (no middle names).

  5. There are some names with phonetic pronunciation that can be commonly used in both Japanese and English. (eg. Marisa, Ren, Mei) Although my brother has a english first name and Japanese middle name.

  6. i remember applying to work at a Japanese chain store (in the US) and there were 3 other people with the same name as me just because its a common name among hafu people 😂(i didnt get hired,,,)

  7. Can’t speak for Americans, because I’m Brazilian, but my country has the biggest nikkei population in the world, and it’s very common for many nikkei here to have a Japanese name, and a Brazilian name, for example, Carlos kenji.
