How are graduate courses in Japan structured?

Currently have a BA degree and interested in pursuing graduate school, not just in Japan. What is the possibility of mobility from one discipline in the BA to another at the master’s level in Japan? I got accepted to various linguistics programs in the USA but that was not as difficult coming from a background in languages, but in the case of sciences, would I essentially require a relevant degree or is it possible with English taught programs in Japan?
