I don’t understand how schools can get away with this…

How can they demand so much from a teacher and say it’s “not an entry level position” or “it’s not enough to be international and have esl experience” and then pay 300k a month?

I will have my license by the end of this year. That ad is insulting. Am I being ridiculous? Is this the norm for international schools in Japan?

  1. That ad is always listed on gaijinpot, too. I don’t know if the turn over rate is super high or if no one’s applying

  2. I would just avoid GaijinPot, honestly. I’ve never seen a good job posted there.

  3. So what you will have your license at the end of the year. What relevance does that have? You are not being forced into this job. This job ad was not cerated to target you specifically. How exactly are you insulted? It’s a job posting. There are plenty of shitty postings out there. Move on

  4. There are so many people on this subreddit that are unnecessarily hostile, probably mostly for job security reasons. Yeah, it’s a terrible position for that pay. Don’t worry about it. Japan is one of the worst job markets, especially for teachers with average or below-average qualifications. Too much supply.

  5. Short answer? Because there’s a constant supply of starry-eyed fish for them to sucker in.

  6. If they offer full regular employee benefits, then I’d rate it as “average.” If not, then just another run of the mill ALT equivalent.

  7. Well. You do get 10 weeks of vacation.
Pay is not great no. I make more than that and I’m working at an eikawa.

  8. Because they can. That company is aming to providing (sub-par) education to any company that requires parents to have glorified babysitters. Spoiler alert: the business model is successful.

  9. What’s the problem here? Everything listed there is pretty basic expectations for teachers with actual teaching licenses. The pay is pretty standard. ¥300,000 sounds about right for a starting salary, and they likely have a pay grade that increase with experience / if you get a master’s degree.

If they decrease the expectations any more, then this job might drop down to the level of an ALT job.

  10. I have heard – I have not worked there – it works for an entry level /international school/ position. Even with a license, the big names may ignore you without intl school experience unless you are lucky or have an in. This would also give you IB experience.

  11. I don’t know. I am a licensed teacher and I used to work there. I loved it. Great boss, great coworkers. I left to go work abroad in some other countries and haven’t found as supportive environment as I did there. Not to sound super blunt or rude but if you feel you are worth more or want something different, move along. No one is forcing you to apply.

  12. My reading is that…

    – It’s more like a kids eikaiwa in substance

    – A foreign teaching cert mean they are after people who are not qualified to teach in Japan but have SOME experience (doesn’t mean much). They’re vague but they say ‘an additional monthly allowance is also granted for a current valid teaching certificate’… so maybe registered teachers get more?

    – They’re paying 300k a month (might go up over time) which is not great, but better than what most eikaiwa/ALT gigs will pay

    – They provide 10 weeks of holidays (damn good by Japanese standards – there’s your extra pay right there) and IB training (could set you up for later on in your career) so that’s not bad

Overall my guess is that it’s a decent gig for one of those many people who come over, spend a few years with Interac, say ‘I wanna do an online teaching cert!!!’ (possible in one year – different from registration BTW) and then want a teaching job. 300k a month plus 10 weeks of holidays would be a dream compared with Interac.

  13. >How can they demand so much from a teacher and say it’s “not an entry level position” or “it’s not enough to be international and have esl experience” and then pay 300k a month?

Because there are plenty of people who would take that job and the company knows it. I guarantee that ad already has 50-100 applications

  14. ¥300k a month sounds fantastic lol where can I get a job that pays that well????

  15. Because it’s a company not a school.

FYI Gaijinpot charges the companies money to sell you shitty jobs. It is not a job website, it’s a marketing website.

  16. The Japanese education system may have a reputation for excellence, but when it comes to compensating foreign Western teachers, they don’t quite measure up. Instead of paying a competitive rate like private schools in the USA, many employers take advantage of their international staff and offer salaries that are far lower than what would be considered fair or reasonable. It’s an unfortunate reality for those looking to teach in Japan – you can expect great educational standards but not so much when it comes to your paycheck!
