apps most helpful for speaking and writing practice

Basically I was wondering if anyone had any app recommendations that focus more on speaking and writing? Or if there’s an app that has helped your fluency if you’re starting with a decent understanding of Japanese?

I’m half Japanese and have always had a goal of being able to have a proper conversation with my family. I can only fully understand conversations that would be common in a household and am able to ask very basic questions, but as someone who hates small talk, I want to have more meaningful conversations and have my personality shine through when I speak.

I never formally learned Japanese so there’s a lot of gaps in my understanding of grammar and the proper spelling of words. Like I didn’t know that there was a difference in i- and na-adjectives, I just conjugated them based on whichever way sounded better in my head. I probably said さっしん instead of しゃしん up until a few years ago. Apps have definitely been good for clarifying these things for me, but they tend to be too focused on listening and reading when I want more practice with forming my own thoughts. I tend to sound really stiff when I speak Japanese because I translate word for word, but I want to have a more natural flow to my sentences. Especially when I am explaining a story and want to sound entertaining.

So far I like Busuu the best out of the apps I’ve tried – and I still use it since I paid for a year long subscription – but I came on here to see if anyone had better suggestions. The sentences are just very repetitive, speaking practice is very limited, and I rarely ever get people correcting my sentences – which is one of the main reasons why I bought the subscription.

  1. Hm, if you’re half Japanese… Why don’t you talk with your Japanese parent? Or has the Japanese part of the family kinda faded out?

My best advice is make contact with your native Japanese family and have them help you. Writing or speaking with natives and proficient users is the best way to improve. I don’t think any of the apps out there can compare.

Many people use apps to communicate with natives to improve their Japanese past a certain point. HelloTalk gets a dating app rep but used to be pretty good for that purpose if you found the right person. Don’t know about these days, been a while since I used it.
