Some basic finance / tax questions

Hi all!

I got an offer in Tokyo for 650,000 yen per month, with some help for moving costs.

I don’t really have a good idea of costs to expect for rent and such, but I’ve been looking around randomly and it seems like ballpark 200,000 yen a month for an apartment in a somewhat nicer-area of Tokyo is perhaps reasonable guess (first question – is that right? I’m not talking the heart of Shibuya for example, but generally in a “cooler” more desirable area).

If that’s the case, I’m wondering what my 650,000 actually looks like in terms of monthly expenses. \*\*What sort of tax would I assume to be taken out of this 650,000\*\*? It would be me and my spouse.

What would the actual “take home” be if I’m quoted a 650,000 salary?

Also, are there any other major expenses other than rent that I should plan for? Obviously food is a big one but that is something that can vary widely I know. But anything major I’d need to account for?

Thank you so much for your input!

  2. Can’t give specific info but on 650K you’re gonna do sooooo well even in Tokyo as long as you rent a place at 200-250K/month (and yes you can find those in the nice neighborhoods too). All other expenses are nothing on 650K a month. Don’t live too extravagantly and you should be able to save a lot as well.

There are pension, health insurance, employment insurance, income tax, and from the second year you will have resident tax as well. A few years back, I took home ~600,000 on a 750,000 monthly income. So I guess you can expect to take home a bit more than 500,000 from the second year and more than that in your first year.

    > I’m wondering what my 650,000 actually looks like in terms of monthly expenses

Your fix expense would be rent, utilities, food. Just for reference, my family of four pay around 120,000 for food and around 40,000~50,000 for utilities. For 2 adults I guess you will spend 70,000~80,000 or so on food and 30,000 or so for utilities. That combined with your 200,000 rent means you have 200,000 yen or so left for entertainment and saving.

If you are planning to have kids then start saving now is not a bad idea. I love my kids to death but people was not joking when they say kids are not cheap lol.
