Applying for permanent residency as a dependent spouse of Japanese National

Does anyone have experience applying for permanent residency as the spouse of a Japanese National while a dependent spouse?

I ask because I am thinking of applying for permanent residency, and I seem to fulfill all requirements except “able to support oneself independently”. I could support myself independently, but I currently am not because we have a young child. So I am only working part time to take on more childcare responsibilities.

So I cannot prove that I can support myself solely on my income alone. Does that disqualify me from getting permanent residency? Or does my husband’s financial support count toward this particular requirement?

If anyone has had experience applying for permanent residency in a similar situation I’d love to hear about it.

I just am curious if it’s a waste of time to even try applying until I have a full time job of my own…thanks!

  1. You should be ok You will need to show your spouses income, and having a kid is only more helpful for your case of getting PR, good luck

  2. As others have said you should be fine. Only way to actually find out is to apply for it. They will contact you if they need extra documents or if something needs to be explained.

  3. As long as you’ve been married 3 years and a resident for 1 with a spouse visa >1 year they will look at household income rather than individual income.

  4. Thanks everyone for your comments. Didn’t know it was based on household income rather than individual! I couldn’t find that written anywhere so I was curious about that!

I’ll go ahead and give it a shot then 🙂

  5. It will be okay as long as the household income is high enough (You need to check with a lawyer or immigration directly on how much you need for a couple + child)

  6. Yes, it’s the household income like everyone already commented. I applied as a housewife with basically zero income, and our child isn’t even a national and it wasn’t a problem whatsoever. They did ask for one additional document (forgot what it was, maybe something related to pension payments) but that’s it.

  7. And just to add for extra info of anyone ever needs it, I got PR even though I hold a disability passbook (shogaisha techo). Just give it a try, nothing to lose really. And i didnt use a lawyer, I did it all myself.

  8. For spouse visa holders they look at the entire household for financial stability. So you could be a stay at home mom/dad or only work part time but as long as your spouse makes enough to support you it’s fine.

  9. I had a lawyer help me prep everything. It wasn’t expensive and I got mine on my first try. Since I’m planning on living here indefinitely it was absolutely worth whatever I paid “1-2man probably”.

  10. I helped my non-Japanese parent apply. We got it within a month. In our case it was pretty much a shoo-in because they’ve been married long enough to have three adult kids, all Japanese citizens, but still, you shouldn’t have much trouble. Just show your husband’s income. And your part-time income. In fact, I think there’s a few documents you need to get in your particular case to prove that? Not quite sure since it’s been over a year. Maybe it was whether or not you’ve been paying all your insurance, etc. Either way, it’s no issue at all.
