Hi!

I am a foreign university student living in Kyoto and am considering preparing for a marathon for the first time.

Which marathon do you recommend for beginners?🤔

  1. You may also want to try asking in /r/Kyoto.

  2. Best place to check is [here](https://runnet.jp/)

You can filter by distance and location. Check the reviews and have a look at the course to see if it suits you. Also check the cut off times if you are a beginner. I assume you have done a half before? If not Id do a half first.

  3. The Ibuski Nanohanna Marathon in Kagoshima Prefecture is one of the easiest courses to run, according to my husband. He said that would be a good course for a beginner.

“The Kyoto Marathon 2024 will be held on Sunday, February 18.
Application guidelines for runners will be released after July.”

You can also check JTB SPORTS STATION from June. The website is in English. Some marathons reserve a number of spots for foreign runners.

/it would be better to start with 10K’s and half marathons before running a full marathon for the first time.

  5. I’ve done three marathons in the Kansai area (Kyoto Marathon, Biwako Marathon, Kizugawa Marathon), and among the three, I’d recommend Biwako Marathon for a first timer. Kyoto Marathon has a lot of hills, particularly in the first half of the race in Arashiyama and near Ritsumeikan University. The route is fairly crowded throughout the race too since the streets in the city tend to be narrow.

Kizugawa and Biwako Marathons are relatively flat which definitely helps to save your legs for the last few kms. The only reason why I recommend Biwako over Kizugawa is because all finishers get a medal. Although things may have changed, I did not receive a medal when I finished Kizugawa back in 2015. That said, the cost of registering for the race is much cheaper (7000 yen) compared to Biwako (15,000 yen) and Kyoto (20,000 yen).

Good luck training for your first marathon!
