My company offered it to me to get me a working visa, but I told them I’d like to take a few extended trips before deciding.
Some possibly relevant background: US citizen, oftware dev making right around 70k a year, and already working remotely full time.
I take it this is legal in Japan, right? Sorta sounds like a visa loophole but I guess at the end of the day it’s a real business making real money in the Japanese economy so I guess it gets a pass. I know it’s fine in other countries but Japan has… odd immigration policies.
And how would the tax situation play out? In my research I saw I get tax breaks on US tax for living out of country but how significant are those breaks? I’m aware I must pay Japanese tax. How much of the cost burden did your company place on you and remove from your salary?
I can probably afford to take a salary hit, as from what I understand, software dev doesn’t pay there (or anywhere) like it does in the US.
A lot of questions I know, sorry, haha. Just trying to straighten things out in the scenario I take the offer.

How do they plan on doing this. They can’t just “get you a visa”. They need to have a Japanese branch doing business in Japan.

Nope, they’re pretty straight forward.
edit: PEO/GEO is the JP entity.
I thought if you use a PEO, you become officially employed by the PEO who handles your taxes and all, while your old company subcontracts you through the PEO.
