Trying to Link Credit Card to Bank Account(口座振替), realized katakana last name is slightly different on my bank account information

Hello everyone!

I’m trying to apply for a credit card (SMBC NL card, could do everything except link bank account). When I tried to link my bank account, it kept giving me the “names don’t match” error. So I decided to go investigate by setting up ゆうちょダイレクト and realized my last name is slightly wrong in the ゆうちょ銀行 system. My last name starts with VA (and is otherwise a nightmare to turn into katakana) and my supervisor used ヴァ to start my name so I just copied her spelling for all further paperwork, but a couple places print my last name as starting ヴア. I realized my ゆうちょ銀行 account has the second one. My guess is this is the problem OR the problem is I didn’t put my middle name in the credit card application because it just said 氏 and 名, but bank account has my middle name as well.

Now I’m trying to set up the transfer in ゆうちょダイレクト but I’m worried it’s going to give me an error again. Should I go to the bank and ask them to correct my name? Try to go back into my credit card application and put in the name my bank account has (but isn’t the katakana spelling I usually use) or add my middle name in the 名 section? I don’t see any option to go change my name in the credit card application so I’m worried I’m just screwed and have to wait until 6 months later and try again with my bank name.

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with complicated katakana names when trying to link bank to credit card? Thank you in advance, my complicated katakana companions!

  1. The interbank system doesn’t have small kana so it’s going to be ヴア, that is not a problem.

But you do need middle name, yes.

  2. Fellow person with a complicated name here! In my case I don’t have a family name so my first name is split to two. I think in my Yuucho account they somehow managed to not split my name, but anyway I was not able to link that account when I applied for Amazon Mastercard a few weeks ago.

What ended up happening was instead of bank account linkage over the internet, they sent me a physical letter to my address to fill in my bank account details, push my inkan on and send back with a photocopy of my number card + zairyuu card.

  3. I had a similar issue recently. My bank account uses middle name, credit card I was applying for didn’t have a space for it online.

Since the online services just check to see if the names are exactly the same on both accounts, it didn’t work.

The easiest solution for me was just to use the mail in service to link the accounts. Took about a month but I haven’t had any problems since.

  4. I think the problem is about your middle name, you should include it in your credit card application. I had the problem before and when I updated my name with the credit card to include my middle name together with my first name, I was able to link my bank account. So it might be the same case.
