Installing dishwasher to the washing machine water supply and drain?

I’m thinking of getting a dishwasher. My kitchen sink is on an island in the middle of the kitchen, but I have more counter space next to my washing machine.

I’m wondering if it would be possible to hook a dishwasher up to the water supply for the washing machine, maybe using a branch faucet or something, and if anyone has done something like this?

I’m thinking of one of the standard “no construction” Japanese types I’m seeing on Amazon btw

Cheers!

  1. Yes, but you might need to replace your faucet if you can’t find a branch for whatever’s currently installed

  2. Yes, it should be possible. The branch faucet outlets are usually the same click-lock thingies for both types of machine as far as I’m aware.

However, I’m not sure dual branch adaptors exist, you may want to have a look at your local hardware store. I mean I’m sure there’s an appropriate adaptor for your washing machine, but you’re using that, right? Two from the same outlet could be iffy.

Edit: I have one of the “no-construction” types by the way, from Iris-Ohyama. It’s been working absolutely fine so far. Five litre tank for one wash. A bit on the small side though, and doesn’t deal well with VERY dirty dishes.

  3. I haven’t found a dual faucet which is earthquake-safety compliant. You could modify one standard double faucet but if a strong earthquake happens and the hose gets unplugged, you will flood your apartment.

I would suggest to get a plumber add a second faucet next to your washing machine faucet.

  4. i went and talked to yamada denki and they sent a dude to our house who checked exactly what we’d need then wrote me up a quote with everything listed. you could easily purchase the stuff yourself BUT we’re not handy so just we just got the guy to come back and do it all for us.

we got a panasonic countertop one and it’s a gamechanger (even though i feel like most of the time spent washing dishes is now spent unloading/loading the dishwasher).
