Although teachers do check that young students can write words ( [here’s one that tests a young student’s ability to convert from hiragana to katakana](https://i.imgur.com/DgE4rs0.jpeg) ), most all Japanese words are simply phonetic so a more culturally equivalent brain-power test would be the Chinese character aptitude test I guess:
