Mochi are a food and they’re round, maybe that’s the reasoning.

His intention is likely to mean what other comments said, it’s unusual to say もちもち to a pregnant woman.
It’s more suitable for the stuff like cheeks or skin.
I wouldn’t say that to a person themselves.
