Chatgpt is terrible, however..

Obviously ChatGPT is terrible at helping with any questions you have about Japanese, however, the other day I asked it how I can remember certain words using mnemomics, and it actually did alright.

It breaks down the word into parts and gives you a description of how to remember. I did this with the word くしゃみ、 and it explained the KU is someone saying the word, ‘cool’ and the ‘SHA’ is like the inhale before a sneeze sound, and the ‘MI’ is like someone saying ‘It was me that did the sneeze’.

Its not brilliant but it seemed to work.. haha

  1. Why don’t you use the other battle tested 10.000 mnemonics that are available through RTK, Wanikani or similar content?

  2. >ChatGPT is terrible, ***however***…

    No.

    >the KU is someone saying the word, ‘cool’

Ah, yes, right down to that L and everything.

The word ‘coo’ (or, for that matter, ‘coup’) exists, by the way, but even that wouldn’t be very good as a mnemonic, because it’s too long. く is a short vowel.

    >the ‘SHA’ is like the inhale before a sneeze sound

I don’t think I’ve ever inhaled in such a way as to sound like ‘sha’. On that note, the word ‘shah’ exists, though it has the same problem as above.

    >and the ‘MI’ is like someone saying ‘It was me that did the sneeze’.

Overly long, but probably the least terrible of the three.

Please stop trying to justify using ChatGPT, especially when far better resources are *already available*.

  3. ChatGPT can be a good tool if used correctly.

Yes, it is far from perfect but you can use it in some way as long as you use it properly and know its limitations. I’ve made a video about it and I actually use ChatGPT as part of my study routine as I find it helpful. For people completely new to studying Japanese this may not be a good option, but when you have your basics down and know what sounds correct and which not, it could be a useful tool.

I would not use it for mnemonics at all, but like I said, I already made a video about it so

I personally would recommend using ChatGPT if you use it in conjunction with other tools like Anki or Memrise.
