Privacy laws Japan and exam proctoring software?

Long story short: professor wants us to take our exams at home using a special program that can take complete control over your laptop/computer and use your camera/audio whenever they see fit

first off its stupid because COVID is over and we could just take it in classes.

Anyway, what are the privacy laws regarding this? Does anyone know? Im certain that by forcing us to install such stuff they are breaking the law.

I dont want to install spy and malware on my PC. In Europe and the USA there were a lot of scandals involving software like this.

  1. I think you’re over reacting. Just run it on a virtual machine. Google how to set up a VM on my computer and then you can direct the download there and use it there but not let it have access to the rest of your machine.

  2. Privacy laws govern the handling, publishing and/or disclosure of information, not usage of this sort of software. Proctoring software has no specific legal issues in education, though it would be questionable if used in a work setting.

This is an issue to take up with your school, not with the courts.

  3. How will students who do not own, or have access to a PC at home, take the exam?

When I was in University here, that was the case for quite a number of students. Our school had computer labs that they could use, with some that were open 24/7.

If your school has similar facilities, perhaps you can use one of those PCs for your exam.
