5. Kimbop is not sushi. It’s really important to understand that one’s cultural food is really important, and this applies to both Korean cuisine and Japanese. They are not the same culture and these are not the same foods.

   Su means vinegar and shi means rice in Japanese. Koreans also eat vinegared rice (cho bop) but kimbop is NOT vinegared; it’s predominantly flavored with sesame oil, sesame seeds, and salt.

   In particular, this is particularly egregious because of the Japanese occupation of Korea and how they tried to eradicate and subjugate Korean culture. They tried to wipe out the language, culture, food, everything.

   I love both foods and love that others do too. But please don’t call Korean food Japanese food.
